Learn to Swim

The Learn to Swim Program provides individuals with a solid foundation of water safety knowledge and skills. Instructors are University of Minnesota Students that are certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED. The program features a variety of knowledgeable and responsible instructors who create the fun and excitement of our swim lessons.

Class Information

  • Class Length: 30 minutes with an extra 15 minutes of optional play time.
  • Class Size (max): 10 participants
  • Prerequisites: 6 months to 2 years old, one parent must accompany child in the water.
  • Skills: Basic water orientation, comfort with a non-parent adult in water, aquatic safety, and face submersion.

  • Prerequisites: 4 years of age or older, must be comfortable with one-on-one interaction with an adult and able to follow direction.

  • Skills: Front crawl 15 yards (with face in water and side breathing, not complete rotary), elementary backstroke 15 yards with complete whip kick, streamline on front and back with flutter kick, dolphin kick 3-5 body lengths, flutter kick on front and back with kickboard 15 yards, tread water, back float, and survival float 30 seconds each.

  • Skills: Entering pool headfirst in compact and stride positions (Minneapolis only), tread water using 2 different kicks for 2 minutes, swim underwater, 3-5 body lengths, survival float, 30 seconds, breaststroke and butterfly for 15 yards, Front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke for 25 yards, front crawl and backstroke open turns, flutter kick and whip kick on front and back with a kick board.

  • Class Length: 50 minutes
  • Class Size (max): 8 participants
  • Prerequisites: Successful completion of Timberwolves or instructor consent.
  • Skills: Cooper 12-minute swim test, appropriate turns for each stroke while swimming laps, learning the principles of setting up an exercise program, calculating target heart rate, using a pull buoy, fins, paddles, and a pace clock while swimming; 50 yards of back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, 100 yards of: front crawl and elementary backstroke.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons

Private lessons are a great way to receive personalized instruction. Individual classes allow the instructor to focus on specific skills based on each participant's needs. Private lessons are often a popular choice for adults and families with busy schedules.

If you are interested, email the LTS office or call the office at (612) 625-3794. The lessons are then individually arranged with the instructor and can be held at either the St. Paul or Minneapolis campus. These classes are available to all and are generally 30 minutes in length.

Passes must be purchased at the front desk of St. Paul Gym, or the University Recreation Center.
