Learn to Swim

The Learn to Swim Program provides individuals with a solid foundation of water safety knowledge and skills. Instructors are University of Minnesota Students that are certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED. The program features a variety of knowledgeable and responsible instructors who create the fun and excitement of our swim lessons.

Class Information

No experience is necessary! This course will teach the basics of log rolling.

  • Safety around and on the log
  • How to get on the log
  • The proper stance and balance
  • Footwork
  • Rolling with another person

This is a 5-week course that will include 30 minutes of instruction and 15 minutes of free time each week. On the last day of the course (February 17) there will be a tournament from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm hosted by the Minneapolis Key Log Rolling Club.

  • Prerequisites: 6 months to 2 years old, one parent must accompany child in the water.
  • Skills: Basic water orientation, comfort with a non-parent adult in water, aquatic safety, and face submersion.

  • Skills: Appropriate turns for each stroke while swimming laps, learning the principles of setting up an exercise program, using a pull buoy, fins, paddles, and a pace clock while swimming; 50 yards of back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, and 100 yards of front crawl and elementary backstroke.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons

Private lessons are a great way to receive personalized instruction. Individual classes allow the instructor to focus on specific skills based on each participant's needs. Private lessons are often a popular choice for adults and families with busy schedules.

If you are interested, email the LTS office or call the office at (612) 625-3794. The lessons are then individually arranged with the instructor and can be held at either the St. Paul or Minneapolis campus. These classes are available to all and are generally 30 minutes in length.

Passes must be purchased at the front desk of St. Paul Gym, or the University Recreation Center.
