Instructors

Instructors are University of Minnesota Students that are certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED. The program features a variety of knowledgeable and responsible instructors who create the fun and excitement of our swim lessons.

Trout

Trout: Level 1 (Parent/Child 1)

6 months to 2 years old

Parents and children are introduced to the fundamentals of water safety and water discovery in a fun, stimulating environment. This class will help equip parents with information on how to safely submerge, hold, and assist infants in and near water. 

  • Requirements for class:
    • Parent/guardian in water with infant during entire class
    • Swim suit 
    • Swim diaper

Trout: Level 2 (Parent/Child 2)

2-3 years old

Parents and children focus on the fundamentals of water safety and development of skills that will help children prepare for Bass Level 1. This class incorporates activities that introduce the fundamentals of skills such as submersion, blowing bubbles, assisted kicking and floating, and arm movement.

  • Requirements for class:
    • Parent/guardian in water with infant during entire class
    • Swim suit 
    • Swim diaper

Bass: Level 1 (Preschool: Level 1)

3-5 years old

Children in Bass Level 1 (formally preschool level 1) will practice water safety and how to develop comfort with floats, submersion, pool exits, and arm and leg movement. This class is designed for beginner swimmers who are not yet comfortable in the water. Instructors will utilize different flotation devices with swimmers, while also encouraging independent swimming.

Bass: Level 2 (Preschool: Level 2)

3-5 years old

Children in Bass level 2 (formally preschool level 2) will further focus on gaining confidence and independence in the water by concentrating on control and movement in the water. This class is best suited for participants who need guided practice and are not yet able to independently swim on their own or stay afloat.  Instructors will utilize different flotation devices with swimmers, while also encouraging independent swimming.

Bass: Level 3 (Preschool: Level 3)

3-5 years old

Children in Bass level 3 are introduced to practicing skills without flotation devices. Skills include floats, front and back glides, and arm and leg movement on front and back. This class is best suited for participants who are comfortable independently swimming.

Pike: Level 1 (Youth: Level 1)

5-12 years old

Pike: Level 3 (Youth: Level 3)

5-12 years old

Children Pike level 3 (formally youth level 3) introduced to practicing skills without flotation. Skills include floats, front and back glides, and arm and leg movement on front and back. This class is best suited for participants who are comfortable independently swimming.

Pike: Level 4 (Youth: Level 4)

5-12 years old

Participants in Pike level 4 will continue practicing arm and leg action on front/back and will be introduced to breaststroke kick and dolphin kick. This class is best suited for participants who can independently swim and are ready to begin more complex stroke work.

Pike: Level 5 (Youth: Level 5)

5-12 years old

Participants in Pike level 5 will practice freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly with an introduction to aquatic equipment use. This class is best suited for participants who are ready to continue refining their skills in backstroke and freestyle while also learning more about breaststroke and butterfly.

Pike: Level 6 (Youth: Level 6)

5-12 years old

Participants in Pike level 6 continue to advance their strokes, work on building endurance and will also be introduced to flip turns. This class is best suited for participants that have a general understanding of breaststroke and butterfly and are able to swim freestyle and backstroke proficiently.

Muskies

Muskie: Level 1 (Beyond: Level 1)

8-13 years old

Participants will refine stroke techniques and work on building their endurance. They will learn to swim all four strokes the length of the pool and learn competitive techniques. This class is best suited for those who are not able to consistently swim all four strokes the length of the pool and are looking to increase strength and endurance.

Muskie: Level 2 (Beyond: Level 1 )

8-13 years old

Participants will continue to work on building endurance, practicing all four strokes, and understanding competitive swimming techniques. This class will focus on swimmers' strength and endurance with the goal of increasing speed and efficiency.

Adult: Level 1

Ages 16+

Participants will learn basic floating, kicking and stroke techniques as well as introduce other beginner swim skills based on each individual’s progress during the class.

Adult: Level 2

Ages 16+ 

Participants in this class will refine their strokes and build endurance as well as understand basic competitive swimming terms to put into practice.

Ages 16+
 
Participants have the ability to swim as a workout, and move efficiently and confidently through the water. Those who participate in this class have goals to do more lengths of the pool and begin to build more endurance and understand how to use different types of swim equipment.
