Wanted: Outdoor Trip Leaders

The U of M Outdoor Center is looking for qualified Outdoor Trip Leaders for the 2015-2016 acadmic year. The primary responsibility of the Trip Leader is to ensure the safety, quality, and enjoyment of Outdoor experiences.  On the most basic level, this consists of working closely with another Trip Leader and the full-time staff, to develop, plan, and facilitate outdoor trips. Requirements: Current University of Minnesota registered student, taking 6 or more credits. Actively participate in 40-hours of trip leader training sessions (Spring Semester). Attend a 4-day trip leader training trip (May). A 1-year commitment to the COA trip leading program (Fall-Spring Semester). 2014 Rock On Indoor Climbing Competition

About the Event Often imitated, never replicated! The 2014 Rock On Climbing Competition! It is always a fun and social atmosphere. Competitors receive scores based on their bouldering and top-rope climbing abilities. All entrants will receive a t-shirt, hospitality throughout the day, and will be entered into drawings for many door prizes. Entrants must be U of MN Students and must register prior to the day of the event. Event Details Date: Saturday, November 22 Time: 10:00am-5:00pm Location: U of M Outdoor Center (Minneapolis) Registration Register Today! Register online before Friday, November 21: $30. Mountain Bike Basics Day Trip

  • September 7 (Sunday, 11am-3pm)
  • October 11 (Saturday 10am-2pm)
  • Minnesota Off Road Cyclists (MORC) maintain some amazing trails in the state. Learn to mountain bike and take advantage of these great resources. Students will learn the basics of bike handling, shifting and braking while enjoying the single track terrain, banked corners and rock gardens of Lebanon Hills.

    Limit 5. Cost $30 students / $40 general.
    Mountain bike in good working order and helmet required. Price includes mountain bike, helmet, and water-bottle.

Wednesday Night Bike Ride

  • September 10 - October 8 (Wednesdays, 5pm-8pm)
  • Minneapolis is one of the most bike friendly cities in the country and you will find out why on this evening ride. We will depart from campus and explore and spend the evening exploring the wide variety of bike trails accessible to everyone on this casual ride. There will be opportunities to view a variety of natural and historical landmarks and sample the diverse food options around the area. Every week will feature a different ride, so join us every week! Feel free to bring your own bike or rent one from the Outdoor Program.

    All rides depart from the Center for Outdoor Adventure Office. Cost Free / Single Speed Bike Rental $10

Rock Climbing Day Trip
Taylor's Falls, MN

  • September 14 (Sunday, 9am-4pm)
  • September 28 (Sunday, 9am-4pm)
  • October 12 (Sunday, 9am-4pm)
  • Go climbing on the cliffs above the scenic St. Croix River. This trip is a great opportunity to learn the basics of climbing and get outdoors onto real rock before the cold weather sets in. We will spend the day learning basic climbing techniques, safety and belay skills. No previous experience needed.

Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga

  • September 20 (Saturday, noon-4pm)
  • Transfer your yoga skills to this new water activity. A fitness yoga and SUP instructor will spend a few hours teaching the balance and strokes needed to enjoy yoga on the local lakes in style! Course includes paddleboard, instruction and transportation. Swimming proficiency required. You will get wet, so bring a swimsuit and towel.

  • October 4 (Saturday, 11am-4pm)

  • Spend an October afternoon paddling among the chain of lakes and seeing the fall colors of the city. This is an excellent introduction to canoeing and canoe strokes, or an excuse to get out on the water one more time this fall.

  • Location: Meet in the COA Office

Rock Climbing Weekend
Lake Superior's North Shore

    Come experience some of the best climbing in the Midwest! We will climb on 160ft tall sea cliffs along the North Shore of Lake Superior which offer majestic views of the largest freshwater lake in the world. Climbs are available to accommodate new climbers as well as to challenge veterans. We will spend the evenings tent camping. No experience necessary.

Rock Climbing Weekend
Blue Mounds, MN

  • October 24-26 (Friday, 3pm-Sunday, 8pm)

    Bison reside in this beautiful south-western Minnesota Park. The large rock outcrop, known as "The Mound" has provided the park area with an exciting past. The cliff appeared blue to settlers going west during the 1860s and 1870s. They named the prominent landmark, the Blue Mound. At the Mound's southern end is a 1,250 foot long line of rocks aligned in an east-west direction. Who built it and why is unknown. The Sioux quartzite rock, make this a unique rock climbing site. We will spend the weekend rock climbing and hiking in this hidden gem. No experience necessary.

Afton State Park Backpacking

  • November 1-2 (Saturday, 8am-Sunday, 5pm)

    Afton is a beautiful park just west of the Cities. Beautiful backcountry prairie campsites make for a great one night getaway without the travel. We will backpack a short distance into the campsite and spend the day hiking and enjoying the change of seasons. This is an excellent introduction to backcountry travel.

Winter Camping Afton State Park

    Do you have what it takes to endure the cold? Bundle up and learn to enjoy the solitude of winter camping in this early winter outing. Learn the techniques and strategies for being smart in the cold. We will backpack a short distance in and then enjoy the quiet that winter camping brings. Warm up by the fire and enjoy the camaraderie of the giant COA group tent!

  • Welcome back to school! The first week of every semester is Free Climbing Week. No previous climbing experience necessary. Our friendly staff will help you with everything you need to know and, as always, all equipment is provided.

  • If you like to climb and want to take the next step towards climbing independence, this free clinic is for you. Belay technique will cover everything you need to know to climb as safely as possible in a top-rope gym setting. After this course, you will have all of the information necessary to pass the belay qualification test at the U of M Climbing Wall.

    All climbing equipment is provided. Limit 2-12 participants. Cost Free / Advance registration required

Indoor Sport Climbing
(Beginning September 15th)

  • Sunday 9/28, 10/19, 11/16 (1pm-3pm) Minneapolis Climbing Wall
  • Are you ready to take on the challenge and responsibility of sport lead climbing? This clinic will introduce you to the technical and mental tools necessary to climb on the sharp end of the rope. After this course, you will have all of the information necessary to pass the lead belay qualification test at the U of M Climbing Wall. All climbing equipment is provided. Previous top rope belay experience mandatory. Comfort top-roping at least at the 5.8 level is highly recommended. You will be lead climbing and taking lead falls in this clinic.

  • Are you new to climbing and want to make the most of your experience at the climbing gym? This series of four clinics will connect you to a group of climbing partners, show you the basic technical systems, improve your movement and technique, and challenge you physically. These clinics are the perfect way to build your climbing knowledge and confidence with a supportive group of climbers.

  • Session 2: Climbing Grades, hold types, and footwork
  • Session 3: Climbing movement: body position and balance

  • Location: Minneapolis Climbing Wall
  • Have you reached a plateau in your climbing and want to break through to the next level? Or do you want to maximize the gains from the time you spend climbing? Whether you are a newer climber looking to improve or a veteran looking for some personalized coaching, this series of clinics will motivate, forge climbing partnerships, and help you improve technique and strength. Using video analysis, progress tracking, and climbing "homework" between sessions, you will see great gains in ability at the end of 8 weeks. After this series, you will have the requisite knowledge to develop a personal training plan.

The Outdoor Transition Series: Technical Climbing Systems

  • You have been climbing for awhile and want to take your technical skills to the next level. Perhaps you dream of big alpine faces or a weekend outing with friends to the local crag, but do not have the knowledge to make the trip. In this series of clinics, we will cover the essentials of making the transition from indoor to outdoor climbing. Topics will range from climbing knots and ethics to self-rescue systems and rappelling.
