Outdoor Trips

Cross Country Skiing

  • February 1 (Saturday, Noon-5pm)
  • February 8 (Saturday, 10am-3pm)
  • Spend the day learning the basics of classic Nordic skiing at the University of Minnesota Nordic Center. This is a great opportunity to get some fresh air and take advantage of this popular Minnesota winter activity.

    Limit 11. Cost $18 students/$25 general

Stand Up Paddleboarding

  • February 2 (Sunday, 7pm-9pm)
  • March 9 (Sunday, 7pm-9pm)
  • April 6 (Sunday, 7pm-9pm)
  • Location: University Aquatic Center (Meet at the Outdoor Center)
  • Learn the basics of the hottest new paddle sport. We will spend 2-hours in the University Aquatic Center Natatorium, learning the balance and strokes needed to enjoy paddling the lakes in style on a SUP (stand up paddleboard)! Swimming proficiency required. You will get wet, so bring a swimsuit and towel.

    Limit 6. Cost $12 students/$25 general

Skate Skiing

  • February 7 (Friday, 2-5pm)
  • Location: U of M Nordic Ski Center
  • Spend the afternoon learning the basics of skate skiing at the University of Minnesota, Les Bolstad Golf Course. This is a great opportunity to get some fresh air and try this popular Minnesota winter activity.

Snowshoeing – Afton State Park

  • February 9 (Sunday, Noon-5pm)
  • Spend the day snowshoeing in the winter wonderland that is Afton State Park. Learn the basics of this fun winter activity in the solitude of a State Park setting.

Itasca State Park - Cabin Trip

  • February 14-16 (Friday, 2pm – Sunday, 5pm)

    Established in 1891, Itasca is Minnesota's oldest state park. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. The group will walk across the mighty Mississippi as it starts its winding journey 2,552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Participants will spend the weekend in a heated cabin and snowshoe/cross-country ski around the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Ice Climbing Day Trip

  • Location: Sandstone, MN
  • If you have ever wanted to try out the sport of ice climbing, here is your chance. We will spend a day climbing and learning basic ice techniques at Robinson Quarry, in Sandstone, MN. No experience needed. Price includes all equipment and instruction. Dress warm, because it will be cold!

Women's Ice Climbing

  • February 22 (Saturday, 9am-5pm)
  • If you have ever wanted to try out the sport of ice climbing, here is your chance. Leave the Bros behind and learn to ice climb with an encouraging group of inspiring women. We will spend a day climbing and learning basic ice techniques at Robinson Quarry, in Sandstone, MN. No experience needed. Price includes all equipment and instruction. Dress warm, because it will be cold!

Winter Camping Trip (Afton State Park)

    We will spend a night braving winter. We have plenty of warm equipment and experienced leaders to instruct you how to stay warm in the outdoors during a great Minnesota winter. We will backpack into a campsite, build a fire, and enjoy the beauty and solitude that make winter camping so unique. 0 degree sleeping bags, pads, group equipment, transportation and instruction provided. No previous experience is needed.

    Limit 10. Cost $45 students/$60 general

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Backpacking

  • March 15-22 (Saturday, 6am-Saturday, 8pm)
  • Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting Sunday, March 2, 7 pm

    Come explore the beautiful Appalachian Mountains on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina as we backpack the ridges and valleys of GSMNP.  From windy summits to river crossings, this trip is sure to be an adventure.  Excellent physical fitness is a must.  Prior backpacking experience preferred.  Trip cost includes transportation, permits, and equipment.

    Limit 4. $475 students/$550 general/ or $200 deposit.

BWCAW Ski, Snowshoe & Cabin Trip

  • March 16-20, 2014 (Sunday, 8am-Thursday, 6pm)
  • Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting Sunday March 2, 7pm

    The group will stay at the YMCA Camp Menogyn, off of the Gunflint Trail, where we will enjoy a heated cabin, a HUGE kitchen, and a wood-burning sauna that is right on the lake (there will even be a hole in the ice to jump into for the brave at heart!).  We will spend five days exploring the BWCAW on x-c skis and snowshoes.  Price includes transportation, 4 nights lodging, x-c skis, snowshoes, and group gear.

    Limit 9. Cost $325 students / $395 general / or $200 deposit

Canoeing Day Trip

  • April 26 (Saturday, Noon-5pm)
  • Location: Calhoun, Isles, Cedar Lake
  • Spend an early April afternoon paddling among the chain of lakes and seeing the beautiful colors of the city. This is an excellent introduction to canoeing and a great opportunity to learn various canoeing techniques and strokes.

Rock Climbing Day Trip

  • April 19 (Saturday, 9am-4pm)
  • May 3 (Saturday, 9am-4pm)
  • Location: Taylor's Falls
  • Go climbing on the cliffs above the scenic St. Croix River. This trip is a great opportunity to learn the basics of climbing and get outdoors onto real rock before the busy summer season begins. The group will spend the day learning basic climbing techniques, safety and belay skills. No previous experience is needed.

    Limit 10. Cost $40 students/$50 general

Mountain Biking Day Trip

  • April 13 (Sunday, 9am-2pm)
  • May 3 (Saturday, 9am-2pm)
  • Location: Lebanon Hills
  • Minnesota Off Road Cyclists (MORC) maintain some amazing trails in the state. Learn to mountain bike and take advantage of these great resources. Students will learn the basics of bike handling, shifting and braking while enjoying the single track terrain, banked corners and rock gardens of Lebanon Hills. Limit 5. Price includes mountain bike, helmet, and water-bottle.

    Cost $30 students/$40 general

Backpacking - Superior Hiking Trail

  • May 2-4 (Friday, 1pm-Sunday, 5pm)
  • Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting Sunday, April 27 (Outdoor Center Office, 7pm)

    Here is a great chance to experience the spring weather of the North Shore of Lake Superior. Enjoy the scenic views along the Superior Hiking Trail.

Boundary Waters Canoe Expedition

  • May 18- 22(Sunday, 8am – Thursday, 6pm)

    Minnesota's Boundary Waters is unique and peaceful place that everyone should enjoy at least once, and there is no better time than May. This trip will allow participants to experience the portages, lakes and camping of the Boundary Waters in a perfect climate.

    Limit 12. Cost $250 students /$315 general /$100 deposit w/ remainder due by May 11.

Wind River Range Backpacking

  • July 19-26
  • Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting Sunday, May 4 (Outdoor Center Office, 7pm)

    Wyoming's Wind River Range is home to soaring granite peaks, alpine lakes, moose, and marmots. On this trip we will explore this awe-inspiring wilderness on foot. We will spend 5 days in the backcountry. Condition depending, we have the option to hike to the summit of one of the many peaks in the range for an additional challenge and amazing views! The trip will depart from and return to the Salt Lake City International Airport.

    Limit 10. $475 students/$550 general/ or $200 deposit. Cost does not include airfare to Salt Lake City

Free Climbing Week
Minneapolis and St. Paul Climbing Walls

  • January 21-26 (Tuesday-Sunday)
  • The climbing wall is an exciting place in the winter. Come check out the climbing wall free of charge this week! Climbing is a great way to build strength, stay in shape, and meet new people. No previous experience is needed and equipment is provided. See brochure for climbing wall hours.

Free First Time Climbing

    If you have never climbed before or just want to check out the climbing wall you have no reason not to! Your first time climbing at the wall is on us. All equipment is provided and our staff will help you with everything you need to know to get the most out of your climbing experience. As one of the top three full body workouts, rock climbing is a great alternative to your current workout routine. Climbing is also a great social activity so bring a friend.

Belay Technique Clinics

  • Time: 6:00-7:30pm
  • If you like to climb and want to take the next step towards climbing independence, this free clinic is for you. Belay technique will cover everything you need to know to climb as safely as possible in a top-rope gym setting. After this course, you will have all of the information necessary to pass the belay qualification test at the U of M Climbing Wall. All climbing equipment is provided.

    2 to 12 participants. Free Admission. Advance registration required.

Indoor Sport Climbing

  • Sunday, February 9 (1:00-3:00pm)
  • Sunday, March 2 (1:00-3:00pm)
  • Sunday, April 13 (1:00-3:00pm
  • Are you ready to take on the challenge and responsibility of sport lead climbing? This clinic will introduce you to the technical and mental tools necessary to climb on the sharp end of the rope. After this course, you will have all of the information necessary to pass the lead belay qualification test at the U of M Climbing Wall. All climbing equipment is provided. Previous top rope belay experience mandatory. Comfort top-roping at least at the 5.8 level is highly recommended. You will be lead climbing and taking lead falls in this clinic.

    2 to 10 participants. $15 students/ $20 general

Climbing Technique

  • Wednesday, March 5 (7:00-9:00pm)
  • Location: St. Paul Gym Wall
  • Whether you are new to climbing or feel you have reached a plateau in your ability, we will highlight the crucial techniques needed to climb more efficiently and confidently. This clinic is an opportunity to receive the individual feedback needed to accelerate your improvement or just learn the basics. All climbing equipment is provided. No experience necessary.

    5-10 participants. $15 students/$20 general

Climbing Knots Clinic

  • Wednesday, March 26 7-9pm
  • Location: St. Paul Gym Wall
  • If you want to expand your climbing knowledge and may be interested in learning how to build climbing anchors, this clinic will cover the foundational knots for more advanced climbing activities.

    5 to 10 participants. $10 students/$15 general

Indoor Anchoring Basics

  • Wednesday, April 9 (7:00-9:00pm)
  • Location: St. Paul Gym Wall
  • In this clinic we will cover the theories and systems needed to build efficient and strong climbing anchors for sport, trad, and top-rope climbing. There will be plenty of time for hands-on practice. Prerequisite: Climbing Knots Clinic or equivalent knowledge

    5 to 10 participants. $15 students/ $25 general

Multi-Pitch Fundamentals

  • Wednesday, April 23 (7:00-10:00pm)
  • Location: St. Paul Gym Wall
  • In this clinic we will discuss the tools and techniques needed to overcome the additional challenges of climbing multi-pitch routes. Topics include rope management, top-belay, rappelling strategies, and belay stations among others.
    Prerequisites: Indoor Sport Climbing and Indoor Anchoring Basics or equivalent experience

    3-8 participants. $25 students/ $35 general

Introduction to Self-Rescue

  • Wednesday, April 30 (7:00-10:00pm)
  • Location: St. Paul Gym Wall
  • A working knowledge of self-rescue is a must for any climber looking to venture into multi-pitch terrain. This clinic is also valuable for anyone using a top belay in areas like Shovel Point. Topics will include escaping the belay, hauling systems, and passing a knot among others.
    Prerequisite: Multi-pitch Fundamentals or similar experience

    3-8 participants. $25 students/ $35 general

Rock On 2014 Climbing Competition

  • March 8 (Saturday, 10am-5pm)
  • Location: Recreation and Wellness Climbing Wall
  • Registration Deadline: Monday, February 24

    Often imitated, never replicated! The 14th Annual Rock On climbing competition will be boss! It is always a fun and social atmosphere. Competitors receive scores based on their bouldering and top-rope climbing abilities. All entrants will receive a t-shirt, hospitality throughout the day, and will be entered into drawings for many door prizes. Entrants must be U of MN Students and must register prior to the day of the event.

    Limit 50 climbers. Cost $25 (U of M Students Only)

Collegiate Climbing Series Competition

  • April 6 (Sunday, 10am-5pm)
  • Location: Recreation and Wellness Climbing Wall
  • Registration Deadline: Monday, March 24

    Come compete in the University of Minnesota's first Collegiate Climbing Series sanction competition! Climb with students from other schools across the Midwest in a fun environment. The competition will be bouldering only and feature routes for all ability levels. Registration preference will be given to USA Climbing members, but membership is not required to compete. Must present valid student ID to compete.

    Limit 70 climbers. Cost $30
