Green in the City (Hybrid)

Green in the City (Hybrid)

Embark on an adventure with us this summer as we connect with urban green spaces in a creative way while expanding our knowledge of urban forestry and basic tree biology with our friends from Youth Engaged in Arboriculture and the UMN Department of Forest Resources! This program will be a mix between in-person and online sessions as we practice ways of aging a tree, identifying different trees and shrubs, while also taking a moment to practice our tree poses in order to learn about the life cycle of a tree. Other topics will include figuring out how rambunctious is that fungus, exploring what a gravel bed is, and sampling the fruits of our labor by tasting in-season fruits fresh from the trees in the UFore Teaching and Outreach Nursery.

Monday, Thursday, and Friday will be in-person. Tuesday and Wednesday will be live and interactive via Zoom (participants will need access to a devide that can login). In-person days have the opportunity to go virtual if the public health situation and state require.

Earth Systems Journey™: Energy (Virtual)

Earth Systems Journey™: Energy (Virtual)

When you flip a light switch or adjust your thermostat in your home, you are part of an amazing network of energy across the nation that is rapidly changing. How will these changes affect climate and the planet's communities of people, animals, and plants? We'll explore these questions in hands-on activities using art, design, science, engineering, and geographic information systems (GIS) as we go on a virtual journey following energy flows from the sun, from fuels, across power-lines and pipelines. By the end of camp, you'll publish an online story map and have a plan for making a difference in your community. Optional Lunch Club over the noon hour for both our middle and high schoolers to bring their lunch, connect with their peers, and engage in some extended learning and social time! Participants will need access to a device that can log into Zoom.

This two week program for Middle Schoolers (ages 12-14) meets Monday - Friday, 11:00am - 12:00pm (Online), and for High Schoolers (ages 15-17) from 1:00pm - 2:00pm. Optional Lunch Club from 12:00pm - 1:00pm each day (online) is included for both.
