Select skill building and physical activity opportunities from the wonderful world of sports and recreation are available to you this summer! Sessions range from beginner to advanced, and are noted in the descriptions. Almost all sessions will be outdoors, with limited group sizes, while observing the MN Department of Health & CDC guidelines.

Learn-to-Programs: Climbing Club

Learn-to-Programs: Climbing Club

Discover and develop lifelong skills with NEW programs and opportunities! Whether you are trying a recreational activity out for the first time, ready to build on your previous experience, or interested in a great challenge, these Learn-to-Programs are right for you! You can pick the level that suits your experience in order to participate in a club that's made for you.

Climbing Clubs with U of M Youth Programs provide kids with the opportunity to explore the sport of rock climbing. Each Club is designed with activities, games, and lessons that are age and skill level appropriate to help youth develop their climbing abilities. Join us this summer, and check out the all new YP climbing program!

Clubs meet one day a week for four weeks (A&B Sessions) or three weeks (C Session). Climbers can sign up for consecutive sessions to continue to participate in the sport of climbing. Coaches work each week to create customized activity and lesson plans to ensure an engaging experience whether it's day 1 or day 1000. Additionally, climbers can choose to sign up for more advanced Clubs as their skills develop to continue learning and growing as a climber. Each Club will have a maximum of 10 participants.

 

Climbing Club: Chipmunks

Climbing Club: Chipmunks

Chipmunks Club will introduce young climbers to the sport of rock climbing with a focus on social and personal development. Climbers will participate in a wide variety of games and activities designed to build confidence and stretch their comfort zone. An emphasis on movement and technique will support the development of body awareness. Chipmunks will have the chance to work through fears, develop self confidence, and encourage their peers in a supportive environment. No previous experience required. Sign up for Tuesdays OR Wednesdays.

Climbing Club: Squirrels

Climbing Club: Squirrels

Squirrels Club will help new climbers learn the fundamentals of the sport and support young climbers with prior experience in developing their skill. This club focuses on foundational movement and technique through the use of a wide range of games and activities. We will emphasize that climbing is fun and that everyone can find a personally meaningful way to participate. Additionally, young climbers will learn how to set personal climbing goals and work through challenges to reach them. Through this, participants will develop confidence, competence, and self awareness in a supportive environment. Sign up for Tuesdays OR Thursdays.

Climbing Club: Koalas

Climbing Club: Koalas

Koalas Club provides the opportunity for older climbers to get introduced to the sport of rock climbing and for climbers with experience to continue to hone their skills in a fun and supportive environment. Climbers in this club are encouraged to take the optional belay lesson offered Week 2 of each session to learn how to take on the additional responsibility of holding the rope for a climbing partner. Climbers will learn and develop foundational movement and technique through lessons and individualized coaching.

Climbing Club: Lemurs - Advanced

Lemurs is our most advanced Climbing Club for those looking to take their climbing to the next level and immerse themselves in the sport. We will build on the foundation of movement and technique each climber brings and focus on developing visualization skills and self reflection tools needed to understand and improve more complex movements. This club will ask participants to consider where they want to go in the sport of climbing and support them in developing their own goals and learning plans. We will also cover foundational concepts of mental, technical, and physical training in an age appropriate way. This club embraces the idea that climbing is a sport that challenges personal development within the context of a community. Participants will work to show up each day ready to challenge themselves, challenge others, and provide support and encouragement for everyone's growth. Previous participation in a climbing club, camp or similar climbing experience required; ability to belay or a commitment to take the belay lesson offered in Week 2 of the session is required.

Climbing Club: Belay Basics

This optional session will teach young climbers the fundamentals of belay technique for climbing, including knowledge of equipment, tying knots, climbing commands, safety commands, and safety. This lesson will empower participants to take on more responsibility in their climbing to be able to reach new heights. This session is the perfect opportunity for the young climber who wants to take a deeper dive into the sport. This session is required for all climbers participating in the Lemurs Club.

Learn-to-Programs: Golf

Learn-to-Programs: Golf

Learn the FUNdamentals of this lifetime sport from PGA professionals at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course. Weekly lessons will include instruction and games, as well as activities and exercises that emphasize how the body moves during the golf swing. Beginner classes are an introduction to putting, chipping, and full swing technique through games and drills, plus etiquette and rules. Intermediate classes are designed for youth who can get the ball airborne consistently, and they will continue to develop their skills and etiquette at a higher level. Bring golf clubs if you have them; some equipment is available for use if needed. Plan accordingly for weather with a cap, sunscreen, water bottle, and umbrella or rain gear as well as a backpack to carry it all. Drop off and pick up will take place at Les Bolstad Golf Course, near the St. Paul Gym.

Note: There will be no classes the week of July 5th-9th during A Session due to the July 4th holiday and YP Office closure.

Learn-to-Programs: Tennis

Learn-to-Programs: Tennis

Discover your potential as you learn to play this lifelong activity. Coaching and curriculum is based on the USTA guidelines. Participants will develop a series of fundamental skills based on their skill level such as ground strokes, volleys, lobs and serves, as well as footwork, grip and technique in a lively, fun atmosphere that will contribute to players' love of the game.

Net Setters (Beginners) will begin on a smaller court with the red ball, which is made of foam or felt, is larger, bounces lower and travels slower making it easier to learn and acquire skills. Progressing on, participants will use the orange ball, which travels through the air a little faster and farther than the red ball, but are similar in size comparison and still has a lower bounce. Net Setters will work on racquet handling, basic forehand and backhand, overhand serve, service return, and basic volley. For ages 7-9, sign up Mondays OR Wednesdays. For ages 10-12, sign up for Tuesdays OR Thursdays.

Top Spinners (Intermediate) will continue on a slightly smaller than full size court with the orange ball; and progressing up as their abilities allow to the green ball which has a slighty reduced bounce compared to the yellow ball making the transition to a full size court much easier. Top Spinners will continue to improve their forehand, backhand, serve, service return, and more.For ages 9-11, sign up Mondays OR Wednesdays. For ages 12-15, sign up for Tuesdays OR Thursdays.

Bring your own racquet if you have one; otherwise equipment is available for use. Athletic shoes are required for all participants. Plan accordingly for the weather with a water bottle, sunscreen, a cap, an umbrella or rain gear, as well as a backpack to carry it all.

Disc Golf

Our intro to disc golf program will emphasize skills development to play the game. Fun, competitive drills and games will be incorporated each day. Focus will be on personal improvement and having fun! Each participant will learn Disc Golf rules, sportsmanship etiquette, focus, and accuracy for short, medium and long throws. Instruction will include daily warm-up, age appropriate sport specific conditioning, and cool down. Practice new skills and review previous skills learned each day. Disc Golf is a lifelong sport and a great activity to enjoy the outdoors. You'll be able to take your new found skills out and about this summer with your family and friends, as our Twin Cities area is considered a top Disc Golf community in the nation with many premier, beginner, intermediate and advanced level courses! Wear sunscreen, athletic clothes, and sneakers. Bring a full water bottle and get ready for this fun one hour activity session, four days a week.

Bodyweight Strength & Flexibility (Virtual)

Bodyweight Strength & Flexibility (Virtual)

Zoom in with us this summer as you increase your strength and flexibility using your own bodyweight! Upper body, core, and lower body strength exercises will be instructed with best practices for warm up, proper form, and cool down. Each 60 minute session will introduce bodyweight exercises that are safe and effective for each developmental age group. Each session will consist of learning new exercises, reviewing previously learned movements, and a full workout. Join our instructor as he teaches in an uplifting and motivational style in a fun, educational, and safe environment! Classes will meet 4 consecutive days and participants will need access to a device that can log into Zoom. Wear appropriate athletic clothing and footwear, and have a filled water bottle close by.
