Minnesota Sport Schools

This program provides campers with the opportunity to gain a new appreciation for sports in a non-competitive environment. Learn and practice the basics through drills, skill progressions, and light competition. Beginning to intermediate sports instruction and daily recreation activities combine for a balanced full day experience. Two and a half hours each day will be spent learning and playing a specific sport while the remaining time is spent playing games, rock climbing, swimming, and discovering the many opportunities available at the University of Minnesota.

Archery

Archery

Aim, shoot, BULLS-EYE. Learn discipline and marksmanship from the challenging sport of archery. Develop technique with a keen eye at a game oriented facility, where participants will practice on artificial animals at times. Parents, please speak to your child about this possibility. In addition to targeting game animals, youth will practice their skills on conventional targets and balloons.

Canoe Leadership

Canoe Leadership

Spend the week on the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes learning from an instructor with over 30 years of experience. Do you know the deep history of the lakes?Develop a love for paddling and the skills to go safely on the water. You'll learn how to do rescues, about the micro-climates of the lakes, and the Dakota history. Friday brings and extended expedition to paddled, completed with portage of Lake Harriet and Minnehaha Creek. Plan accordingly for the water with a cap, sunscreen, water bottle and rain gear.

Flag Football

Flag Football

Experience the excitement of football in a non-contact format. Learn plays and strategies and practice the core skills of passing, catching, and de-flagging or defensive positioning. The week ends with the YP Bowl, giving participants a chance to showcase their skills on the gridiron.

Handball

Played with a likeness to tennis, racquetball, and squash, handball is an easy to learn sport that is physically active and fun. It’s a great balancing act — developing both sides of the body and brain as campers learn how to strike the ball with both hands.

Log Rolling

Log Rolling

Jump on to this opportunity to have fun with log rolling. This unique sport dates back to the 1800s but recently has been growing in popularity, even being featured on ESPN’s Great Outdoor Games. A sport that improves balance, agility, footwork, and concentration, log rolling can be safely enjoyed at any age. Participants must have and demonstrate intermediate swimming skills to participate. To prevent skin irritation, which may occur from getting up onto the log frequently, longer style swim shorts or fitted, knee length athletic or biking style shorts are required. Basic water shoes or barefoot style shoes are also recommended.

Ready to learn what it takes to be an Outdoor Adventurer? Spend the week learning how to pack a backpack like a pro, work as a team to navigate using map and compass, cook over an open built yourself, and basic shelter construction using a tarp and Para cord. Campers spend time learning how to meal plan and what equipment is needed for a trip, as well as how to read the weather. The Outward Bound staff will help you escape to nature and survive with ease. This camp includes two field trips to put all of your new skills to the test. An additional waiver is required with registration.

The final day of camp will put these skills to the test, as campers paddle to make camp and prepare their own meal. Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing

Explore new heights by learning to rock climb. With an emphasis on safety and fun, this camp will provide opportunities to develop climbing skills in a supportive environment. Campers will learn how to manage the ropes for their climbing buddies, tie some basic climbing knots, identify different types of climbing holds, and gain an understanding of basic climbing movement techniques. In addition to fun-filled games and activities, campers will take a field trip to the University of Minnesota Climbing Gym on the Minneapolis Campus and to a local Indoor Climbing Facility. (For 8-10-year-olds)

Come continue the vertical adventure with Rock 2. The camp will help climbers develop confidence in their skills and encourage progress by learning climbing specific movement techniques. Technical instruction is interspersed with fun-filled activities and games to provide climbing challenges in a fun, constructive environment. As young climbers learn new skills, they will also have new climbing opportunities with field trips to the U of M Climbing Gym on the Minneapolis Campus and Vertical Endeavors Indoor Climbing Facility. Previous climbing experience is highly encouraged. (For 11-14-year-olds.)

Squash

Squash

Rated as one of the healthiest sports, squash camps are not only a great way to build skill and learn a new game, they are a great way to have fun and form new friendships. This lifetime sport camp will help players improve hand-eye coordination by focusing on forehand and backhand techniques. A focus will also be on footwork, drills, game strategy, etiquette, safety, and sportsmanship all while having fun. Squash is about coordination rather than strength and therefore is enjoyed equally by all. Equipment, including goggles, is provided.

Learn and review the various elements of Tae Kwon Do and how it developed through Korean history and culture. Find out more about self-defense and the choices and consequences involved. Track and Field

Track and Field, or Athletics as it is known in many countries, is an athletic event in which contestants compete in various running, jumping, vaulting, hurdling, and throwing competitions. It is also an ancient sport that is commonly practiced today, especially in the Olympics. Campers will spend the week learning about the different events, forms, techniques, and history of Track and Field through fun activities, and then participate in a track meet on the last day.

Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest growing team sports in the country. Played with a flying disc, it combines elements of soccer, football, and basketball, resulting in a fast-paced sport enjoyed by people around the world.
