Ozark Mountains

The Eagle Rock Loop trail in the Ouachita National Forest of Arkansas is one of the most iconic backpacking trips in the Ozark Mountains. This trip will spend four days exploring the bluffs and rivers of this area on foot. Participants will learn the foundational skills needed for a successful backpacking trip.

Belay technique will cover everything to climb as safely as possible in a top-rope gym setting. After this course, participants will have all of the information necessary to pass the belay qualification test at the U of M Climbing Gym. All climbing equipment is provided.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

Enjoy the solitude and beauty of one of Minnesota’s most scenic landscapes, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in winter. The group will stay in cabins and enjoy the beautiful lodge of YMCA Camp Menogyn. From this base camp, participants will venture out on day excursions cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and dog sledding.

These clinics are the perfect way to build climbing knowledge and confidence with a supportive group of climbers.

  • Session 1: Climbing safety and belay technique. 
  • Session 2: Climbing grades, hold types, and footwork.
  • Session 3: Climbing movement: body position and balance. 
  • Session 4: More climbing movement and basics of climbing training.

Minnesota Off Road Cyclists (MORC) maintain some amazing trails in the state. Learn to mountain bike and take advantage of these great resources. Students can learn the basics of bike handling, shifting and braking while enjoying the single track terrain, banked corners and rock gardens of Lebanon Hills.

Spend the afternoon learning the basics of classic Nordic skiing on man-made snow and a beautifully groomed trail. It’s a great opportunity to get some fresh air and try this popular Minnesota winter activity before winter officially begins. Price includes X-C ski equipment, day-pass, instruction, and transportation included.

Come experience some of the best climbing in the Midwest. Climb on 160-foot tall sea cliffs along the North Shore of Lake Superior which offer majestic views of the largest freshwater lake in the world. Climbs are available to accommodate new climbers as well as to challenge veterans. Spend the evening's tent camping.

Take the first step towards climbing outside on your own by learning to build climbing anchors. Spend one evening learning essential knots, anchor theory, and basic anchor systems. After familiarizing with the basics, apply this knowledge in the real-world setting of Taylors Falls, one of the most popular climbing areas in the state.

This clinic will introduce the technical and mental tools necessary to climb on the sharp end of the rope. After this course, participants will have all of the information necessary to pass the lead belay qualification test at the U of M Climbing Wall. All climbing equipment is provided. Previous top rope belay experience mandatory. Ability to top-rope at least 5.9 required. Lead climbing and take lead falls in this clinic.

Learn the basics of this enjoyable paddle sport. Spend a few hours learning the balance and strokes needed to enjoy the local lakes in style on a SUP (and up paddle board). The course includes paddleboard, instruction, and transportation. Swimming proficiency required.

Minneapolis is one of the most bike friendly cities in the country and you will find out why on these evening rides. Depart from campus and explore and spend the evening exploring the wide variety of bike trails accessible to everyone on this casual ride. There will be opportunities to view a variety of natural and historical landmarks and sample the diverse food options around the area. Every week will feature a different ride. All rides depart from the Center for Outdoor Adventure Office.

Leaves Saturday at 10:00 am

Bundle up and learn to enjoy the solitude of winter camping in this early winter outing. Learn the techniques and strategies for being smart in the cold. Backpack a short distance in and then enjoy the quiet that winter camping brings. Warm up by the fire and enjoy the camaraderie of the giant COA group tent.
