Description
Come explore the beautiful Appalachian Mountains on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina as we backpack the ridges and valleys of Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  With windy summits, verdant valleys, and bubbling rivers, this trip is sure to be as beautiful as it is adventurous.  Come learn first hand why this is the most visited National Park in the United States by getting away from the crowds and into the backcountry for a one of a kind experience.  Prior backpacking or camping experience is beneficial, but not required.

Itinerary
Day 1:  Saturday
We’ll depart early from the Outdoor Program Office for a 15 hour drive to Gatlinburg, TN.  This will be a great opportunity to get to know your companions, listen to music, or read a book.  The group will spend the night at a campground.

Day 2:  Sunday
Preparation day!  The group will buy groceries and get backpacks ready for the hike to start tomorrow.  There will also be time to go on a day hike to get your first taste of the unique landscape.  Another night in a campground will give you the chance to rest before the real fun begins.

Day 3:  Monday
Today, you will drive to the trailhead with a great chance to view herds of elk that are native to this area.  9.5 miles of hiking will bring you to your camp for the night.  Cook dinner over a camp stove, watch the sunset, and enjoy the night in a unique backcountry shelter.  This shelter will be welcome as this is the single hardest day of hiking of the trip.

Day 4:  Tuesday
After a challenging first day of hiking, day two will cover 6 miles of ridgeline with incredible views over the valleys below.  Take the day at your own pace, enjoy the scenery, snap some photos, and enjoy the conversation as you hike with your fellow travelers.

Day 5:  Wednesday
The 6 miles of hiking today will descend a ridge into the valley of Pretty Hollow Creek.  You’ll follow this beautiful waterway for much of the day as you descend into camp for the night.

Day 6:  Thursday
Hike for 7.5 miles with a mix of valleys, streams, and ridgelines.  The group will pass by the van today to restock on food and supplies.  Enjoy one last night of camping in a tent near the confluence of two rivers.

Day 7:  Friday
Only 5.5 miles to go!  Hike back out to the van and begin the drive back to the University of Minnesota.

Day 9:  Saturday
The final day of driving will bring you back to the Outdoor Program office by 7 pm where you’ll say goodbye to your new friends.

Description
The Superior Hiking Trail is the premier long distance hiking trail in Minnesota and extends for over 310 miles from Duluth to the Canadian Border along the North Shore of Lake Superior.  The trail goes through diverse landscapes from low river valleys to the high bluffs of the Sawtooth Mountain Range overlooking Lake Superior and features a variety of forest types typical of Northern Minnesota.  This trip spends three days exploring a section of the trail while teaching the foundational principles of backpacking including equipment, camp setup, and Leave No Trace.  Every trip features a unique route curated by experienced trip guides.

Itinerary
Day 1:  Friday
Meet your guides in the Center for Outdoor Adventure Office by 9 am.  After an overview of the itinerary and a thorough gear check to make sure you have everything you need, the group will pile into a University 10 passenger van for the 3.5 hour drive to the North Shore of Lake Superior.  Once at the trailhead, you will strap on your backpack and begin the hike.  The first day is a shorter day of hiking with distances ranging from 2 to 5 miles.  Once you arrive at the remote campsite, you will work with your new friend to set up tents, gather firewood, and prepare a well earned dinner.

Day 2:  Saturday
Rise and shine after a refreshing night sleeping in the tent.  This will be a bigger day of hiking, but be sure to spend some time relaxing in camp with a cup of coffee or tea.  Even though you just set up tents and sleeping bags the night before, it’s time to break down camp and pack everything back in your backpack.  This day will cover 8 to 12 miles of beautiful terrain - take it at your own pace and be sure to enjoy the views.  Backpacking is not a race so enjoy the experience.  You’ll stop to fill your water bottles from bubbling streams and enjoy a snack while taking in the views from the top of a peak.  Once in camp, you’ll know what to do to get everything set up.  Enjoy the evening sharing a meal, sitting around the campfire, looking at the stars, and reflecting on the day.

Day 3:  Sunday
It will be hard to believe that you’re heading home already.  You may just want to stay on the trail for a few more weeks to hike to its end!  The group will hike out to the van this day covering 4 to 6 miles of trail before beginning the drive home.  If time allows, your Guides will include a stop at one of the North Shore’s prime sites like the view of Lake Superior from the top of Palisade Head, the waterfalls of Gooseberry Falls State Park, or looking for agates at the Beaver River Beach.

Description
Join us on an adventure backpacking down the Paria Canyon in Northern Arizona to its confluence with the Colorado River.  This remote wilderness trip will take you down a narrow canyon with towering, 500 foot sandstone walls, natural stone arches, pictographs, and even quicksand.  Much of the hiking will be in ankle to knee deep water in the Paria River with campsites located along the river.  This is a physically and mentally challenging trip in a remote setting.  We recommend that participants have previous camping and backpacking experience and are able to carry packs up to 50 pounds in weight while hiking up to 15 miles a day through rugged terrain.

Itinerary
Day 1:  Saturday
Did somebody say road trip?  The group will meet at 6 am to start the drive to Arizona.  Bring coffee and a few of your favorite songs to share for the road trip playlist. Your guides will drive the 14 hours through scenic Iowa and Nebraska to this night’s lodging - a hotel on Colorado’s front range.

Day 2:  Sunday
The drive continues for another 10 hours, but at least the scenery gets better.  Enjoy views of mountains over I-70 pass and the changing landscape as you cross the Utah/Colorado border.  After 10 hours on the road, you’ll arrive at Utah’s Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park where you will camp for the night.  Spend some time in the evening exploring the dunes or watching the desert sunset.

Day 3:  Monday
The backpacking trip begins!  After picking up the permit at the Kanab Field Office, you will complete the hour-long drive to the White House Trailhead at the start of the Paria River.  You will hike 7.5 miles this day through some of the narrowest sections of the Paria Canyon.  This night you will camp at Buckskin Gulch under 500 foot tall canyon walls.

Day 4:  Tuesday
Wake up early to spend some time exploring Buckskin Gulch - an incredibly narrow slot canyon that joins the Paria Canyon.  Today’s hike will cover 8-10 more miles as the canyon begins to widen.  Have your camera ready as there are awe inspiring views around nearly every corner.

Day 5:  Wednesday
After cooking breakfast, taking down the tarp shelters, and packing your backpack (a process you will be very efficient at now!), you will continue the journey down the ever widening canyon.  A highlight today is the optional side hike to Wraher Arch which is a natural geologic feature only accessible from the Paria Canyon.  This is a shorter day covering only 5-7 miles of the canyon.  Enjoy some time to rest and recover in camp.

Day 6:  Thursday
This 8 mile hiking day will take you out of the Paria river and into the adjacent desert now that you are nearly out of the canyon.  You’ll hike through unique boulder fields and camp among the cactus.  Enjoy nighttime views of the stars like you can only find in the darkness of the desert on your last night of sleeping in the backcountry.

Day 7:  Friday
The final 8 miles of desert hiking will bring you past several petroglyphs and historic artifacts as you approach the confluence of the Paria and Colorado Rivers at Lee’s Ferry.  From here, you’ll catch a shuttle back to White House Trailhead and begin the drive home.

Day 8:  Saturday
We’ll continue our drive through Utah with a couple of stops along the way to see a few last “must see” sights in Utah such as the Fisher Towers.  14 hours of driving will bring us to a hotel in Kearney, NE.

Day 9:  Sunday
Homeward bound!  8 hours of driving puts the group back on campus.  Help unload the van, say goodbye to your new friends, and head home with memories that will last a lifetime.

Description
Join us on a weeklong backpacking excursion through the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Pictured Rocks traverses the southern shore of Lake Superior and offers accessible and well-maintained trails for backpackers. Along this stretch between the towns of Munising and Grand Marais you can encounter an array of stunning cliffs, waterfalls, beaches, unique rock formations, and views of the vivid turquoise water below. This trip offers something for everyone, from beginners to well-seasoned backpackers. We hope you’ll join us!

Itinerary

Day 1:
Meet up with your guides and fellow travelers at the Outdoor Program Office. From there, we will load into the program van for our road trip down to the Upper Peninsula. We can expect a 7.5 hour driving day, in which we’ll get stoked for the adventure ahead, plan meals, stop for groceries, and enjoy the scenery along the way. Further, your guides will teach you how to most effectively pack a backpack for backpacking, discuss maps and navigation, and highlight blister prevention and hiking safety. Upon arrival, we will camp for the night at a local campground and rest up before our backpacking excursion.

Day 2: 7.1 miles, trailhead to Au Sable point
After a restful night in camp, we will cook breakfast, finalize preparations, and hit the trail. It will feel great to move after the previous day’s road trip. This first day on trail, we’ll travel approximately 7 miles, taking in the lakeshore scenery. We’ll eat lunch on trail and take breaks as desired. Once we reach our group campsite destination at Au Sable Point, we will set up camp, cook, and enjoy an evening together.

Day 3: 7.3 miles, Au Sable Point to Seven Mile Creek
Wake up and start the day with hot drinks and a nice breakfast, preparing for the day ahead. The second hiking day we will travel a similar distance, moving from Au Sable Point to Seven Mile Creek. Keep an eye out for waterfalls and cool rock formations! When we reach Seven Mile, it will feel great to put down the packs and cook tasty food as a group.

Day 4: 8.8 miles Seven Mile to Coves Group
The day will start similar to the others—waking up along the Lake Superior lakeshore, the waves and forest around us. Don’t forget to find your own patterns within the group routine, carving out time to rest, reflect, read, or do whatever fills you up and brings you joy on trail. After the morning’s coffee and breakfast, we’ll travel about 9 miles to the next group site at Coves.

Day 5: 7.2 miles to Mosquito river
The fourth day, we’ll move from Coves to the Mosquito River, a 7.2 mile day. The river culminates in an impressive waterfall feeding into the lake.

Day 6: 12 miles to Munising falls
Our last trail day will also be the biggest, as we follow the route from Mosquito River to Munising Falls. This is our final push! As we embark on this longer trail day, it will be important to pace ourselves and build in rest. Also, make sure to savor the surroundings, too.

Day 7:
We did it! This final morning of our trip, we’ll have our coffee and breakfast, pack up, and take the shuttle back to the visitor center. From there, we’ll drive the approximately 7.5 hours back to the Outdoor Program Office. Chilling in the van, listening to road tunes, and reflecting on our time together will be a great way to cap off this experience.

Take the first step towards climbing outside on your own by learning to build climbing anchors.  We will spend the day learning about the risks of climbing outdoors, essential knots, anchor theory, and basic anchor systems.  After familiarizing ourselves with the basics, we will apply this knowledge in the real-world setting of Interstate State Park, one of the most popular climbing areas in the state.  We will learn the fundamentals of placing artificial protection and spend the day building climbing anchors.  There will be ample time for practice and feedback.  This clinic is designed for individuals with previous climbing experience who are looking to learn the skills and risk management practices to climb outdoors on their own.  NOTE:  This clinic offers in-depth technical instruction.  There will be little to no actual rock climbing as part of the clinic.

Description
Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a unique and peaceful place that everyone should enjoy at least once, and there is no better time than May. This trip will allow participants to experience the portages, lakes and camping of the Boundary Waters during a great season.  With starlit skies, pristine lakes and streams, campfires, spectacular sunsets, and the feeling of satisfaction after a long day of paddling, it will be impossible to pick a favorite part of this trip.  Participants on this trip will learn fundamental canoe strokes, how to portage a canoe, camp living skills, and backcountry cooking and meal planning.  Grab your paddle!

Itinerary
Day 1:
On the first day of the trip  participants will arrive bright and early at the Outdoor Program Office to meet their guides and fellow explorers, finalize any gear necessities, and pack up the van for a 4 hour drive up to our put-in point. After arriving at the launch guides will instruct the group on paddling techniques and canoe safety and the group will canoe 4-6 miles to camp for the night. Once at camp the group will learn to set up tents, cook food, and build a fire. These skills will continue to be refined throughout the trip.

Day 2:
In the morning participants will wake up early once again, pack up camp, and load up the canoes for another day exploring the Boundary Waters. This day will consist of more advanced paddling instruction while the group canoes another 6-10 miles. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife - loons, otters, and eagles all call the BWCA home. After canoeing the group will find a new campsite, perhaps on a beautiful peninsula or even a forested island.

Day 3:
On the third day the group will learn essential skills to ensure portaging goes smoothly and safely. Depending on the excitement and confidence of the group we can choose to basecamp for the day or move on to a new campsite. Either way the day will certainly be filled with adventure and laughter! The group will again paddle 6-10 miles and perhaps see a waterfall or nesting birds. Keep a lookout for constellations at night as the BWCA is considered a Dark Sky Sanctuary and the star-spangled sky is truly remarkable.

Day 4:
During the fourth day the group will once again pack up camp and head out for another satisfying day of canoeing. The group will paddle 6-10 miles and continue to refine the skills in the backcountry. On this day participants will learn navigational skills in the Boundary Waters under the direction of their guides and take a front seat role choosing where to go. The group will then set up camp, make a hearty meal to cap off the day, and share stories around the campfire before retiring to their tents for some needed rest and recovery.

Day 5:
On the final full day of the trip participants will continue practicing their navigational skills and seafaring abilities. Participants will also take on a great responsibility in fulfilling camp duties. During the paddle participants will see more great scenery, so make sure you have a phone or camera available as the stunning views are something you are not going to want to forget!

Day 6:
On the last day of the trip the group will pack up camp bright and early, paddle back to the van, and drive 4 hours back to the COA. During the drive the group will reflect on the trip, share great tunes, and say goodbye to their guides and fellow participants. Feel free to exchange information with your fellow participants in order to share pictures and stories. The group will be back by the late afternoon, just in time for dinner back at their homes!

Description
Join us as we paddle down the Buffalo River through the heart of the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas.  The Buffalo River is a recognized National and Scenic River managed by the National Park Service and is one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the United States.  You will spend the days floating with the current and occasionally navigating short Class I sets of rapids.  With tall sandstone bluffs, forests, and animal life, every turn brings something new.  At night, you will camp on gravel bars along the banks of the river, cook delicious meals as a group, and enjoy camaraderie and conversation reflecting on each day’s adventures.  There will be plenty of time in camp each day to swim, hang out in the sun, or read a book.  This trip is the perfect combination of adventure and fun!  Previous canoeing experience is recommended, but not required.  Guides will provide instruction on paddling techniques, canoe safety, and navigating rapids.

Itinerary
Day 1:
You’ll meet up with your group and guides early at the UMN Outdoor Program Office.  Bring coffee and some song suggestions to add to the trip playlist!  This will be an uneventful day of driving the 11 hours to Arkansas - plenty of time to make some new friends at the start of the trip.  The group will camp at an established campground tonight.

Day 2:
Wake up to the beautiful views of the cliffs surrounding Steel Creek Campground.  After breakfast, the group will complete the final organization of gear and drive to the put in point on the Buffalo River.  After a safety briefing and canoeing instruction, set off downstream and enjoy the 12 miles of paddling down the river.  As you paddle, you will gain confidence in your canoeing skills and your ability to “read” the water to choose the best line through the rapids.  Guides will provide continual instruction and feedback to help you improve.  You will stop occasionally to scout rapids, have snacks, and refill water bottles.

Day 3-4:
Continue down the Buffalo River enjoying the changing scenery as the river widens further south.  Each day, you will get more confident in your canoeing skills.  Each day will have 5-6 hours of paddling to cover 12-15 miles of the river.  This will leave you with plenty of time in camp to relax, explore, swim, and more.

Day 5:
This is your final day on the river, so make the most of it.  Enjoy one final celebratory meal with the group when you arrive in camp for the night.  Spend time sharing stories and reflecting on the trip around the campfire with your new friends after having an amazing adventure.

Day 6:
Driving day!  One day on the road will get you back to the Outdoor Program office by 7 pm.  After unloading the van, say goodbye to your friends and guides.

Comp de Bloc Climbing Competition

Comp de Bloc is a fun, community focused climbing competition at the University of Minnesota Climbing Gym. Join us for great routes, great people, and great prizes. The Comp will cater to climbers of all ability levels. Competition is open to all University of Minnesota students.

The competition will follow a modified flash format with an onsight finals round.  The highest point value will be awarded for a flash of a boulder (climbing it successfully on the first attempt).  A lower point value will be awarded for a successful send on additional attempts.  A competitor's five highest scores will be added together for the total score.  Come, try hard, and have fun.  Additionally, the top 5 climbers from Advanced Women and the top 5 from Advanced Men categories will advance on to an onsight finals round.
