Know Before You Go

Expand all

I have never climbed before. Is that okay?

  • No prior climbing experience is needed!
  • Only at Minneapolis RecWell Climbing Gym, first time climbers will receive an orientation and training that covers all of the key things you need to know to climb.
  • Your first time climbing is free.

Do I need equipment?

Minneapolis RecWell

  • Nope!
  • Climbers may bring their own climbing equipment, but for those that need it, we provide climbing shoes and harnesses at no additional cost.

St. Paul Gym

  • Yes, the bouldering is self-serve, so you must bring your own climbing shoes and chalk.

What is the cost to climb?

Minneapolis RecWell

  • For RecWell members, the first time you climb is free.
  • A semester climbing pass is $60 + tax.
  • A half-semester climbing pass is $35 + tax, available mid-semester.
  • A day pass is $15 + tax.

St. Paul Gym

  • Bouldering is always included in your RecWell membership, no additional cost.

Anything else I should know?

  • Our staff are always happy to answer your questions - just ask!
  • If you have advice (beta, in climbing lingo) about how to climb a route you see another climber attempting, ask them if they want the beta first.
  • There's no one "right" way to climb - as the climber Alex Lowe said, "the best climber in the world is the one having the most fun."
